Sony Introduces Motion Capture for XR Creatives and Avatars

Sony announced in a press release that the company has released a set of wearable motion capture (mocap) devices for the holidays.
Sony’s Mocopi motion capture system uses six-color tracking devices that people wear on their bodies. Users can place them on their ankles, wrists, head, and hips to capture and track real-time movements to control the avatar.
In its press release, Sony said the devices use proprietary technology and a smartphone app to create immersive full-body videos.
“Typically, video production using motion capture requires specialized equipment and operators. Using our proprietary algorithms, Mocopi uses a small number of sensors to create highly accurate motion measurements that will be used by VTubers (virtual streaming) for film and animation production and creators free from temporal and spatial constraints.
The Japanese company will begin accepting pre-orders in mid-December, with the Mocap device priced at around $358 (49,500 yen). Starting Dec. 15, the device will include a software development kit for communicating with metaverse platforms such as VRChat.
VRChat CTO and co-founder Jesse Joudhry says his company leads the industry in “comprehensive tracking with PC VR headsets.”
“With the launch of Sony’s mocopi, we’re excited to bring the same features to standalone VR headsets [...] We hope all headset owners can fully experience the full VRChat tracking experience.
HIKKY CEO Yasushi Funakoshi added that he is pleased that a global company like Sony is “entering a young new market” with “aggressive” motion capture solutions for startups and creatives who are struggling to get such equipment.
“Devices like this are difficult to develop and sell on your own, but they are critical to addressing the very nature of the market. We believe that this device, [provided by] Sony’s world-class technology and expertise, will create many opportunities for a [creative] revolution.” Chance”.
The news comes as Sony is expanding its Metaverse portfolio of solutions to compete with global immersive companies. For enterprises, he acquired XR Beyond Sports to improve his real-time 3D (RT3D) animation.
The company plans to integrate Beyond Sports’ metaverse technology to create RT3D sports games for basketball, football, baseball, tennis and other games. Sony’s latest tracking capabilities will also play back sports events using digital twins and motion capture ball tracking systems for sports audiences.
The company also announced the PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR2) for buying, selling and trading digital assets and filed a patent for a new blockchain technology. Gamers can record gameplay on Sony Playstation consoles, including images, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and video clips.
The tech giant also announced a massive strategic partnership with Epic Games in May to expand its metaverse ambitions. It will use its current serious gaming technology to create social, collaborative and gaming communities.
Sony Group CEO Kenichiro Yoshida explained that it will be expanding throughout Kando’s entertainment space to create feelings and emotions. He will also collaborate with celebrities such as Manchester City FC and perform live with Sony Music. The company may also strike a strategic deal with Honda Motor Co to produce electric vehicles in 2025.
