The BMW Group will share its vision for the future of digital experiences inside and outside the vehicle at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Munich/Las Vegas. The BMW Group will share its vision for the future of digital experiences inside and outside the vehicle at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The BMW i Vision Dee is a futuristic mid-size sedan with a new streamlined design language. The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience, and that’s exactly what it’s aiming for: creating a stronger connection between people and cars in the future. The digital capabilities of the future will go far beyond the voice control and driver assistance systems we are familiar with today. The BMW head-up display spans the entire width of the windshield, giving you a glimpse into the next generation of your vehicle. From 2025, this innovation will be applied to NEUE KLASSE models. The BMW Group has also improved its use of color changing technology. BMW iX Flow with e-ink After introducing the BMW iX Flow at the latest CES, which can change from black to white, the BMW i Vision Dee can now choose from 32 exterior colors.
“With BMW i Vision Dee, we show what is possible when hardware and software come together. In this way, we can realize the full potential of digitalization and turn the car into an intelligent companion. This is the future of the automaker. and BMW: a virtual experience combined with real driving pleasure,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Management Board of BMW AG. “At the same time, the BMW i Vision Dee is another step towards NEUE KLASSE. With this vision, we look to the future and highlight the critical importance of digitalization for our future generations of products.”
With human-like intelligence, the BMW i Vision Dee can accompany drivers not only in real life, but also in their digital environment.
“BMW is known for its unrivaled digital performance. The BMW i Vision Dee is the perfect combination of virtual and physical experiences,” said Frank Weber, Board Member of BMW AG in charge of development. “Someone who can integrate a customer’s everyday digital world into vehicles of any level can successfully master the future of automotive manufacturing.” The display is the digital backlight and the central control element of the BMW i Vision Dee. Using high-tech gauges in the dashboard, drivers can decide how much digital content they want to see on the advanced head-up display. The choice of five steps ranges from simulation to driving-related information, communication system content, augmented reality projections, and access to virtual worlds. At the same time, dimmable windows can also be used to fade away from reality. Mixed reality can be experienced in an immersive way in the BMW i Vision Dee, engaging multiple senses without any additional tools and creating a new dimension of driving pleasure for the user. Modern head-up display BMW: NEUE KLASSE exhibition from 2025. The BMW Group is known in the automotive industry as a pioneer in head-up displays and has systematically improved this technology over the past two decades. In the BMW i Vision Dee, projections spanning the entire width of the windshield allow information to be displayed on the largest possible surface – it can only be recognized as a display when it is activated. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates the enormous potential of projection technology, while the BMW i Vision Dee envisions how advanced projection displays can be used for display and control concepts in the future. From 2025, NEUE KLASSE models will use the standard production version of the BMW head-up display, covering the entire width of the windshield. Welcome scene with voice and digital icons The digital experience has already begun outside of the car with a personalized welcome scene that combines graphic elements, lighting and sound effects. Natural language is the simplest and most intuitive form of interaction, providing a perfect understanding between humans and vehicles. BMW’s headlights and closed grille also form a common phygital (fusion of physical and digital) badge on a single surface, giving the car different facial expressions. This means that the BMW i Vision Dee can communicate with people by visually expressing emotions such as joy, surprise or approval. The BMW i Vision Dee can also project the driver’s avatar onto the side windows to further personalize the welcome scene. World premiere of full-color e-ink technology Following the impressive e-ink debut of BMW iX Flow at CES 2022, the BMW Group is introducing a full-color version of its e-ink technology in the BMW i Vision Dee, which is being used as a vehicle skin for the first time in the world.
The BMW i Vision Dee, instead of a simple alternation of black and white, is now a multi-colour, fully changeable and individually customizable appearance. An e-paper film from BMW Group partner E Ink is applied to the bodywork to create this magical color display. Up to 32 colors can be displayed.
The body surface of the BMW i Vision Dee is divided into 240 E Ink segments, each individually controlled. This allows you to generate and modify an almost infinite number of templates in seconds. The laser cutting process and the electronic film cutting control circuitry were developed in collaboration with E Ink. BMW Group’s in-house engineers have developed technology for programming surface adaptation and animation in a form that is unique in the global automotive industry. Restored Design – The interior and exterior design of the BMW i Vision Dee has been specifically optimized to focus on the digital experience and DNA of the BMW brand. The exterior follows the classic sedan design that forms the basis of the BMW brand. Traditional design elements such as the BMW grille, twin round headlights and the Hofmeister kink have been reimagined with plastic badges replacing analogue elements. This gives the BMW i Vision Dee its own digital yet human character.
In the cabin, digitization goes hand in hand with a reduction in the use of materials, controls and displays so that nothing detracts from the digital experience and enhances a new sense of driving pleasure. The steering wheel has an unconventional design with a central vertical spoke that creates realistic contact points when approached or touched, and can be controlled by moving your thumb. These physical touch points control the choice of content projected onto the windshield and, together with the head-up display, support the “hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” principle.
“With BMW i Vision Dee, we show how the car can be easily integrated into your digital life and become your trusted companion. The car itself becomes your gateway to the digital world – the driver is always in control,” said Adrian van Hooydonk. head of design at the BMW Group. “When applied correctly, technology will create valuable experiences, make you a better driver, and simply reduce the distance between man and machine.” The BMW i Vision Dee represents the digital aspect of the three models and will be another milestone on the road to the next generation of NEUE KLASSE vehicles. In 2023, the BMW Group will talk about the revolutionary concept of the NEUE KLASSE car.
