Dot2Dot Communications integrates immersive virtual reality environments into medical applications to support Alzheimer’s patients. The company has created a solution for healthcare facilities that can mimic the same experience — without a headset. The company has chosen Scalable Display technologies to automatically distort and blend multiple projectors within a 20-foot projection range to create a seamless image.
“The project grew out of the concept of providing visual therapy to Alzheimer’s patients,” explains Sean O’Brien, Creative Technologies, Dot2Dot Communications. “A colleague is working on a project that uses virtual reality (VR) technology for visual therapy. Provides therapy for Alzheimer’s patients by showing familiar people, places, and events. WishPlay curates content for these apps. The real magic is creating content for patients.”
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common form of dementia, is a general term for loss of memory and other cognitive abilities that interfere with daily life. Immersive virtual reality opens up new possibilities for medical applications, in particular memory loss in Alzheimer’s patients. It creates the experience of a real environment by immersing users in memorable content, collecting images, sounds and other stimuli, and using technology to distribute content to immerse patients in the created environment. Healthcare professionals can immerse their patients in simulated environments to evoke specific experiences and targeted emotional responses.
“Previously, medical institutions used virtual reality headsets to deliver content to patients,” O’Brien said. “Headsets required tissue applications for patient comfort. Health care providers must disinfect equipment between each patient to prevent any spread of disease. This is becoming more of a challenge during the COVID-19 restrictions. In addition, these devices are bulky and heavy for the patient. The concept of VR is great, but it poses some challenges that are specific to the healthcare environment.
“We developed an environment designed to provide an immersive virtual reality experience for people with Alzheimer’s disease. Permanent space allowed us to acoustically treat the space and integrate permanent display solutions. We evaluated several different options. Projection. Ultimately, we chose frontal projection due to subtleties of the video display. The interaction with the patient in this particular setting is softer. In addition, the frontal projection allows us to create larger displays.
“Scalable technology is incredible because of the user experience. You don’t need to be a professional projectionist to use their software. Their optical sensors and cameras provide the intricate details of what the projector is projecting. Scalable will Detail automatically calibrates the projector. Scalable is easy to use yet provides a high quality edge blending and warping solution. Scalable software creates a seamless solution for delivering video to peripheral 180-degree projection screens.”
