Macy’s ‘Tragic’ Lantern Festival Thanksgiving Parade Makes Me Worry About the Future

This year, Macy’s has decided to host a second virtual parade in the Metaverse, but it’s not as exciting as it sounds.
I watched the metaverse Macy’s Thanksgiving parade along with the real-life version that merrily lit up Sixth Avenue in New York.
While the real Sixth Avenue is full of happy hour goers, the virtual universe version is lifeless and soulless.
Many balloons themselves are much simpler than replicas of real-life versions of loved ones like Snoopy or SpongeBob SquarePants.
Anyone can watch Macy’s parade in the metaverse, and there’s a live commentary section where people watch this not-so-impressive spectacle.
Will Koss, Executive Producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, previously stated, “We’re thrilled to bring this spectacle back to the web3 virtual landscape and provide our fans, collectors, and us with a highly engaging experience through a fun experience.” Discord community for support.”
Macy’s used the virtual event to promote five of their NFT merchandise, which can be viewed in a virtual gallery.
Viewers were asked to vote for their favorite virtual hot air balloon so it could become a real hot air balloon next year.
The first 100,000 fans who vote for their favorite NFT on the site will receive a free Macy’s digital collectible.
Many companies are investing in the metaverse, hoping to appeal to the public in this virtual space.
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has big plans for the Metaverse and wants it to be so good you won’t want to leave.
Earlier this year, Zuckerberg told Lex Friedman’s tech podcast, “Many people think the Metaverse is a place, but one definition of it is that it’s an era where a mostly immersive digital world has become the primary way we live. We’re wasting our time.”
