James Cameron Says Avatar 2′s Motion Capture Is Far Better Than Marvel’s: ‘Not Even Close’

Avatar: The Path of Water director James Cameron said the sequel’s motion capture technology is much better than what’s happening in the MCU and “not nearly as good.”
According to Variety, Cameron asked the director in a video interview with ComicBook.com if he was inspired by the MCU’s advances in filmmaking or motivated him to reach a higher level.
“It’s clear that big comic book movies have been the driving force behind the industry… the rise of technology has brought everyone together,” Cameron said. “It gives you better artists, more tools, plugins, and the ability to inject code. You have more talented people writing code.
“Our team at WETA Digital is constantly bringing in new people and they’re all coming out of that talent pool. So it improves everything. However, what’s called WETA Effects is now the best. Right? Industrial Light & Magic did a good job but when it comes to the facial expressions we make… Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. Have you seen [Avatar: The Water Path]. It’s not even close. That’s what WETA did.
This isn’t the first time Cameron has compared Avatar to the MCU, as he previously said that MCU and DC characters “act like they’re in college” when it comes to relationships.
Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
