Kojima was worried that if actress Elle Fanning backed out of the project, he would have to rewrite major parts of Death Stranding 2.
A new episode of Hideo Kojima’s Structure of the Brain podcast was released this week, this time featuring Fanning. Kojima said he wanted to use El’s “talent and charisma to create a character that stands apart,” adding that he even revised parts of the sequel’s script based on her off-screen moves.
“I can’t say too much, but she’s a very, very important character,” Kojima said of Fanning’s role in Death Stranding 2. “Yes, I had Elle in mind when I created the character. So I was worried that she would turn down the offer. I had to throw out a scene I wrote because it was the lead.
Despite the importance of Fanning’s role, the actor was completely absent from the first trailer for Death Stranding 2 at The Game Awards last December. The trailer confirmed the return of Norman Reedus as Sam Porter-Bridges and Leah Seydoux as Fragile, but Fanning was nowhere to be seen.
“After this day is over, you should spend more time with me,” Fanning said of a particularly important day in the motion capture process in Death Stranding 2. “But after that day, you said, “I think I’m going to rewrite the script, I had a new idea after meeting you,” she said of Kojima, adding that she was the only character involved in Death Stranding. was filmed that day by Dutch director Nicolas Winding Refn, who gave it a resemblance to the original game.
“I changed a lot, even added new scenes,” Kojima continued. “So we changed a few things while filming the performance, but I wanted actors like El to be part of the creative process.”
Following this, podcast guest and Game Awards host Geoff Keighley revealed that Death Stranding 2 still has “a lot of filming” to be handed over to Kojima Productions next year.
Elsewhere on the podcast, Fanning revealed that Death Stranding 2 takes motion capture to the next level, promising that the sequel already “looks great,” though it’s far from over.
